The Dark Green Arborvitae (Thuja occidentalis) Shrub (also known as the American Arborvitae) is native evergreen that features narrow, pyramid shape that makes it a natural choice for windbreaks, privacy screen erosion control and noise breaker. This Arborvitae requires almost no care when used as a hedge or screen. Plant them in pairs to accents for doors and garden gates.
These Arborvitaes are tall and elegant. Features tiny, leaves that are close together in overlapping rows on branchlets. The foliage changes from bright green in the summer to a multitude of rich yellow-brown-green hues in the winter. Grows in a pyramidal shape, but will adapt well to shearing and shaping. Yields light brown or reddish-brown oblong cones that are ⅜–½" long and persist through winter. Cone scales are blunt-tipped and separate from each other at the base.
American Arborvitae grows at a slow to medium rate, with height increases of anywhere from less than 12" to 24" per year.
Plant in full sun to partial shade (less than 6 hours of shade), in acidic, loamy, moist, rich, sandy, silty loam, well-drained, wet and clay soils.
